Question

How often should I have my hedges trimmed?

The frequency depends on the hedge type and growth rate, but at least once a year is recommended for optimal health and appearance.

Question

When is the best time to trim my hedges?

In Ontario, the best time to trim established & currently maintained hedges is late August through early November. A routine late fall service also ensures a slower re-growth, as trimming inside the main growing season triggers new growth. If your hedges have gone wild & are in need of a serious overhaul, there is no time like the present! While it is best to get to them earlier in spring to ensure you have the summer to fill back in, they will also benefit from a late fall service as taking back any hold points for snow & ice to further damage the hedge is crucial.

Question

How much can be taken off my hedge?

For a standard annual trim, you never want to exceed 1/3rd of foliage. Cedar is an evergreen, meaning they never quite go fully dormant. Because of this, they will continue to grow slowly. Like all evergreens, as they branch out, the inner needles/fronds die off & will not regenerate - meaning, the longer they grow out, the less they can be brought back without doing permanent damage. A great reason to have them professionally serviced annually or bi-annually before they go wild!
